Biochemical reactions

The chemical reactions considered in VCE Biology are limited. This section gives the defintion of the three types of reactions that are of concern in the VCAA Biology study design.

Anabolic reactions

Anabolic reactions are reactions that involve synthesis and require energy to proceed.

Example: Photosynthesis.

Condensation reactions (anabolic reaction type)

These are reactions where a  water molecule is lost when a monomer is added to another monomer to form a polymer.

Catabolic reactions

Reactions that breaks down molecules and release energy.

Example: Cellular respiration.
